1 Graduation Day

It is raining tonight in Montgomery and I am in the exact mood as it looks outside...dreary, cold, and stormy.  We had a busy day today - I went to the hospital three different times.  The first visit was the 11:00 feed and we tried nursing.  This past Saturday was our first time trying this with the girls and they are slowly getting the hang of it.  I have to admit it is much harder than it looks.  Of course, I read all about how the baby will just latch on and how it is a natural process but that just isn't the case with us.  With the girls being premature, they have to be taught everything...breathing, eating, and yes, latching on.  The lactation consultant says that they are doing well for their size and it will come with time.  On Monday, I prayed to have patience with this new endeavor and it has helped me to relax while they try to learn this process.

My second visit was the 2:00 feed and Raleigh's cousins and aunts got to come to this feed.  His cousins are like his younger brothers and it was so funny seeing them around the girls.  They both were a little timid yet fascinated at the same time.  Their moms said that was probably the first time they had seen a diaper being changed...thank goodness it wasn't a dirty one or else they would have been scarred for a while!  Our nurse had Mrs. Price and I try to bottle feed the girls.  They were a little slow and sleepy but we ended up getting most of the milk down.  Right now, both girls are taking 30 cc's of milk which is about half of a bottle.  On Monday, Adeline officially drank all of her milk in one sitting...it was so exciting to watch her little cheeks move in and out gulping down  the good stuff.  Maralee accomplished this feat a week ago so now we are trying for both of them to take all of their bottle each time. Both girls are taking the bottle twice a day and trying to nurse once a day.  It is our goal to get them to take all of their feeds through a bottle/nursing before they go home.  Once home, we will more than likely try to nurse during the day and give bottles at night...we shall see closer to time.

The last visit of the day was the 5:00 with Raleigh.  We usually go to the 8:00 p.m. feed together so we can both bottle feed them but today he wanted to go early so he could rest his eyes.  He has been studying all day for his final test tomorrow.  Please pray for him to remember what he has learned and to work quickly and efficiently on the drawing part of the test.  If he passes this test, he will officially be a licensed architect!!!!!  We look forward to that becoming a reality!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today the girls are officially two months old.  They are 60 days old.  I am so proud of them.  Watching them take the bottle and try to nurse makes me want to cry because I know that they are trying so hard.  It is such hard work for them to learn how to suck, swallow, and breathe.  The competitor inside of me just wants to push them to finish a bottle even though I watch them struggle.  It is such an anxious feeling knowing that the due date is quickly approaching but also realizing that we have a lot to accomplish before we go home.  Each day I feel like something new is being reviewed on their little bodies.  This past week they each got a sign on their isolate labeled fragile bones.  Maralee's bone levels jumped drastically down so she had some intense x-rays done yesterday.  Nothing was fractured (thank goodness!) but we still have to be extra careful with them.  The sign makes me a little paranoid to be honest; we have all handled them with such care and now I feel like I might break them if I grab them the wrong way.  The girls might be small but they are actually easier to handle than a full-term baby.  Anyways, it is just a precautionary but it still weirds me out.  Also, the girls are constantly having their eyes dilated to check if their retinas are protruding.  So far, their eyes have looked fine but tonight the optometrist told us that they had stage one disease. He said this was very common in preemies but when I am told that our children have a type of disease I can't help but be concerned!  To add the cherry on top, today they also have to receive their two month old vaccinations.  In college, I did my internship at the Autism Society and I heard so many stories about how children acted different after they received vaccinations.  I know it is more of a headline with the MMR vaccine but I was still a little hesitant to give my initials today.  Trust me, I believe in vaccinating our children but I was hoping to at least talk to the pediatrician about potentially having the shots spread out a little bit.  Call me paranoid, but it is a concern of mine.  In the end, I gave them permission because I know that the NICU would not give our girls anything that they can't handle for their age and I also realize that it could potentially do the girls (and other children) more harm than good if they didn't receive these shots in a timely manner.

Recently the NICU has been busy with new babies coming in.  Today, I glanced over at a new baby boy and he was so tiny.  He looked like he was breathing on his own but I can tell he is going to be there for a while.  His dad and a family member came in today and I couldn't help but remember what they were feeling as I listened to them asking the nurse questions.  Those first couple of days were such a blur and so much information was being thrown at us.  All we knew is that our girls came early but they were doing okay.  We really had no idea how tough the road truly was ahead of us. One thing that I have struggled with is seeing other babies come and go.  We are officially the seniors that rule the hall of the NICU.  All of our other classmates have graduated to going home but we are still taking our finals.  Recently, we struck up conversation with a new couple that had a little girl in the NICU.  She was born around 33 weeks and her biggest roadblock was learning how to breast feed.  After talking to the parents, I tried to be supportive of them because I could sense how troubled they were but at the same time I wanted to shake them to make them realize that was nothing compared to what we have been through!!!! They got to room-in after two weeks and I will admit that I was very jealous.  I have hope that our day will soon come but some days it just looks so far away.

Friends, a sweet sister shared a powerful word of scripture with me.  It is a tad long but please take time to absorb each and every word.  The more I read it, the better I understand God's love for us and how we are supposed to rely on it.  When we rely on Him, we help others.  Instead of shaking that couple, I earnestly tried to encourage them because I deep down realized that even though their struggle was shorter than mine they were still struggling.  I think that goes for everybody in life.  We all have struggles - some big and some small - and we all need someone to help us.  Jesus is our Savior, our rescuer, and console.  Please take heart to these words from 2 Corinthians: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all consolation, who consoles us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to console those who are in any affliction with the consolation with which we ourselves are consoled by God.  For just as the sufferings of Christ are abundant for us, so also our consolation is abundant through Christ.  If we are being afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation; if we are being consoled, it is for your consolation, which you experience when you patiently endure the same suffering that we are also suffering.  Our hope for you in unshaken; for we know that as you share in our sufferings, so you also share in our consolation...He who rescued us from so deadly a peril will continue to rescue us; on him we have set our hope that he will rescue us again, as you also join in helping us by your prayers, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the prayers of many." - 2 Corinthians 1:3-7, 10-11

Our praise band at church sings this great song called "Let It Rain" by Michael W. Smith.  I found this awesome You Tube video of the song to images from the movie Passion of Christ.  The text is written in another language but I don't need the text to describe the emotions.  Please spend some time listening to this song and worshiping our amazing Savior, Jesus Christ.

2 You Hold Me Now

So, Wednesday night Raleigh and I headed to the hospital to see our sweet baby girls.  On the way, he played his new Hillsong c.d. and immediately I started to cry when the song "You Hold Me Now" started playing .  Earlier that day, I had visited the girls with both of our moms and I got a little sad. They are still too little to hold and Raleigh's mom mentioned that she knew she was "Gabby" but she just wanted to hold her grand babies so bad. It was so hard to see them with all of those tubes inside of them.  Usually, all I see are precious teeny tiny little girls but yesterday I kept seeing these images:

While this song was playing, all I could do was close my eyes and listen to the lyrics:
No weeping, no hurt or pain
No suffering You hold me now
No darkness no sick or lame
No Hiding, You hold me now,
You hold me now

Friends, this is really hard to write.  As I mentioned before, I am trying to look at the positive things and I know that this is a marathon and we are running baby steps right now but I really do want to hold my little girls.  I want to hold them and kiss them and see them open their eyes.  I wonder if they feel those tubes and if they are having a hard time through all of this.  I would have a C-section without my pain medicine again if that could take any pain from them.  I wonder, can they hear me?  Do they know that it is me that gets to touch them?  Do they feel all of this love that surrounds them?

I don't have the answers to these questions.  But, as I boo-hooed in the car on the way to the hospital, I began to experience God's love holding me now, in that moment.  And I realized that even though I can't hold Adeline and Maralee, HE IS.  He is taking away their hurt or pain.  They don't have suffering or know that they are sick.  He HOLDS THEM NOW.

Shakily, I wiped away my tears, and my husband said, "Let's go see those baby girls."  We went inside the NICU and got to spend a wonderful amount of time with the twins.  Raleigh got to see Maralee's face for the first time that night and my heart filled with joy and love as he smiled down at her.  He is such a great husband and dad.  I love him so much.

On the way home, we continued to listen to the Hillsong c.d. but "You Hold Me Now" was still on my heart.  As I mentally played those words in my head, I heard this voice say, "This song would be great to play at Maralee's funeral."  At that moment, I didn't know what to think, wondering did I really think that?????  All of a sudden I busted into tears and asked Raleigh if they were going to die.  If Maralee was going to die.  We immediately had to pull over because neither one of us could hold back the flood gates.  As we held each other, we started to say the words of the song:
No weeping, no hurt or pain
No suffering You hold me now
No darkness no sick or lame
No Hiding, You hold me now,
You hold me now

All of a sudden, I realized the game that was being played.  Satan wanted to throw some spiritual warfare inside my head to freak me out.   He saw how well I was doing, how much I was coming to Jesus instead of him, and he got JEALOUS.  He wanted me to feel hurt and pain.  He wanted me to be in darkness.  He wanted my deepest fear to come true.  Raleigh, totally out of his normal character, was so angry- he looked as if he wanted to fight.  As we sat there, absorbing what was going on, we both realized how sick Satan really is.  How manipulative and deceiving.  He used a song that brought me comfort hours ago and turned it against me.  He is playing hardball and doesn't care if feelings and emotions get hurt.  In fact, he dwells in it, yearns for it, it is his deepest desire to turn God's children away from their father.

Sitting at the stop sign just a block from our house, we began to pray.  We prayed for God to take away our fears.  We prayed for strength and endurance.  We prayed for Him to continue to hold us.  We listened to the song and we heard:
In this life I will stand
Through my joy and my pain
Knowing there's a greater day
There's a hope that never fails

Listening to these words, our hearts filled with God's love and we realized this important fact: WE ARE ON JESUS' TEAM.  HE HAS ALREADY DEFEATED SATAN.  "Shout unto God" is another awesome song by Hillsong that fits this perfectly:
The enemy has been defeated
And death couldn't hold You down
We're gonna lift our voice in victory
We're gonna make Your praises loud

Shout unto God with a voice of triumph
Shout unto God with a voice of praise
Shout unto God with a voice of triumph
We lift Your name up
We lift Your name up

Praise Jesus that HE has already kicked Satan's butt for us.  Friends, I pleading with you....if you don't have Christ in your life, get on his team.  Life really, really stinks and hurts at times but having Him take the pain helps us to keep going.  I can't imagine being on the dark side while going through this battle.  Friends, I am praying that God just puts up an electric fence around my head and heart.  The minute satan starts to sneak into my thoughts I want him to be zapped on the highest voltage.

That will make any dog tuck his tail and run :)

TO GOD ALONE BE THE GLORY

0 Stand Strong

"A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother"     - Proverbs 18:24

Other than our family, the people that know the most about us are our friends.  For better or for worse, they know our strengths, our weaknesses, and all of the things that either drive us nuts or get us excited.  In college, I always had roommates and these friends knew all of my habits...once again, good or bad.  My friend Laura was always so good at doing her laundry and I sent mine home to my mom so she could wash and iron my clothes for me.  How pitiful is that!  The sad thing is she still helps me with this when I need her to - I just can't stand to iron!!!!!  I will admit that I have gotten better at it these past couple of weeks.  The key is not letting it pile up and doing a little bit at a time.  Forgive me for my childish behavior, I'm still learning :)

Another friend of mine, Ashley, knows exactly what will cheer me up.  Every time we get together we have to share oreos and milk.  It is a necessity in our friendship.  As we are dunking our oreos in our glasses of cold milk to the perfect soft yet still crunchy consistency, we pour out our troubles to one another.  I remember one time in high school we were doing this at my parent's lake trailer (yep, we live in Alabama and people go to the lake to stay in trailers...no shame!) and all of a sudden a HUGE cockroach comes climbing up the wall by our bed.  We both scream like girls, our oreos and milk go flying, and we jump on the bed pointing at the darn thing.  Finally, I get brave and take off my flip-flop and declare, "Die bug DIE!!!" while Ashley is squirming saying, "Get it, Christen, get it!!!!"  Sadly for the roach he met his destiny that night but in spite of his tragedy, Ashley and I have a funny memory that we both will never forget.

I will be the first to admit that friendships are not always easy.  We all have experiences where we have been betrayed by friends and have lost friends along the way but I do think we can all agree that we all desire to have fellowship with others.  We were designed to be with one another and it is our choice to choose friends who will stick to us closer than brothers rather than betray us like enemies.  In 1 Samuel, a wonderful story of friendship is shared through the relationship of Jonathan and David.  Their story picks up right after David shot Goliath with his sling and David is brought into King Saul's inner courts to stay with him and his family.  Jonathan was Saul's son and soon became David's BFF.

"After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself.  And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.  Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt." (1 Samuel 18:1,3)

As mentioned in the verse above, Jonathan "became one in spirit with David and he loved him as himself."  Before David killed Goliath, the prophet Samuel picked out little shepherd boy David to be the anointed king of Israel.  Since Jonathan's dad was currently serving as king, he was supposed to be next in line to receive the throne but now this dirty, new kid shows up and is declared to be king.  Honestly, if I was Jonathan, I would be pretty ticked off, wouldn't you?  I would think to myself, "Well, who does this kid think he is that he can just take my throne?  I have royal blood and he smells like dirty sheep!"  Jonathan had every right to hate David but instead he loved him.

He loved him so much that he signed a covenant with David to show the depth of their friendship.  The Hebrew word for "covenant" is "berith" meaning a contract, accompanied by signs, sacrifices, and a solemn oath.  Jonathan and David were both soldiers and his sword, tunic, robe, bow, and belt were his battle gear.  No soldier would go into battle not dressed and prepared so the fact that he gave these items to David showed that he viewed him as his equal.  Jonathan chose not to become jealous of
David but rather to "have in mind the things of God."  He sacrificed himself for the glory of God's kingdom.

How many of our friends would we sacrifice ourselves for?  Who would you sign a covenant with?  Do you have a friend that would stick closer to you than a brother?  I have learned over time that it is okay to just be able to count the number of my tight friends on one hand.  I don't just want my relationships to be Facebook-type friends, I want real, true, honest friendships.  I think following Jonathan's example of sacrifice instead of jealousy can take our friendships to a much deeper level.  We should "love our friends as ourselves" instead of looking at them through slanted, jealous eyes.

The awesome thing about having a relationship with Jesus Christ is experiencing his amazing love.  Jesus always loved others as he loved himself.  When we give every worry and jealous thought to our God he will in return give us peace and love so we can use that in our friendships.  And, just like a marriage, if a friendship is Christ-centered instead of people-centered it will grow into a deep-rooted relationship that will continue to stand strong and upright  through our windy days of life.

Till next time, let your light shine!

Blessings, christen
