5 The Nursery

Happy Friday!

Boy, has this week flown by.  Right now, I have two little girls sleeping so I thought I would quickly post some very belated pictures of their nursery.  I absolutely love this room; it makes me smile every time I am in it.  We really wanted a tranquil, peaceful nursery so it is very soft and simple.  The room has great natural light and I really enjoyed decorating it.  I hope everyone is having a marvelous day.  Enjoy!
Daddy and Maralee

This room was originally an office/craft room for us but when we found out we were having twins,
it was the best room for two cribs!  This view is from the doorway and is the left side of the room.
The crib shown above is Maralee's crib. Our cribs are made by Million Dollar Baby and is called the Annabelle 4-in-1 crib.  We also bought the matching dresser piece of the collection.
Raleigh and his dad applied the beaded board on the slanted wall to give the room
another architectural element.

We hung these framed scripture verses on the wall next to each girls' letter and cross.  Raleigh's sweet cousin reads our blog and she used verses that I had quoted about the girls while I was pregnant.  Such a caring and thoughtful gift that I will treasure forever!
The scripture over Adeline's bed.
Door knobs: Pottery Barn Kids
We decided to keep the existing carpet in the room, but I thought we needed a rug to break up the beige!  I found this at a local children's store and it was very reasonably priced.  It is from The Rug Market and is called 4 polka dots pink.  Originally, this room had an ugly ceiling fan in it and I registered for this Payton chandelier from Pottery Barn Kids without Raleigh knowing!  Our ceilings are standard height and he said that a chandelier would hang too low but I really wanted one so I registered for it anyways :) We ended up getting it as a baby shower gift so I urged him to try and hang it and it looks great!  Perfect finish to a girly room!
Christen, Adeline, Raleigh, & Maralee.  The 9 cube cubby behind us is from Home Depot and is a part of the Martha Stewart Collection.  Inside the cubby shelves, I found these cute pop-up totes from Pottery Barn Kids.  I painted the M picture behind us and found the gingham matte at Jo Ann's Fabrics.

This is the view from the closet.  With Raleigh being an architect, he HAD to do a floor plan of the room.  He had all of these different options for furniture placement, but we ultimately decided to do this layout.  I really like having the rocking chair in the middle of the two cribs.  It also is set up across from the door so I can see what is going on in the hallway.  Our chair is from Storytime Series and is called the Nava.

Adeline's crib. The side table came with our crib and dresser set and is the perfect size for our room.  Since we live in an older home, our windows are not standard sizes.  My sister-in-laws mom is a great sewer and she made the curtains for this room.  The curtains match the bed skirt and I can lower them to make the room darker.
Mommy and Adeline
I had the hardest time picking out bedding.  Originally, I just wanted to do the bedding all in white but I just couldn't settle on a fabric.  I knew I didn't want a themed room and all the bedding that I liked was way too expensive (remember, I buy for two!).  So, I found some fabric that I liked and a family friend made the bumper pads and bed skirt for me!  I think it turned out great!  This is a picture of Maralee's bumper pad.

Here is a picture of Adeline's bedding.  As you can see, I alternated the ties with the bumper pad fabric.  When she made the set, she used the same fabric for the bumper pads as the lining of the skirt.  I really think doing this tied each bed together and what I love about these fabrics is the fact that I could use them interchangeably.  The fitted sheet is from Pottery Barn Kids (it might be discontinued because I could no longer find the link).
This lamp was one of my projects for their room.  My friend found this lamp stand and gave it to me for the girls' room.  I had bought this bunny fabric with the bedding fabric and decided to use it for the lamp shade.  I just bought a plain shade at Home Depot for $12 and used Tacky Glue to adhere the fabric to the shade.  To finish the look, I used my hot glue gun to apply the pink edges and the ribbon going down the shade.  Lamps like this in children stores are easily $50 so I saved about $35 doing it myself!
I also made these picture boards to hang snapshots of the girls.

One day the girls will actually enjoy this room but for now it makes me smile :)

Till next time, let your light shine!

I asked for these shoes for my birthday and I have loved them so far. Personally, I like the look of these shoes compared to the Sketchers but I hear that the Sketchers work just as well when it comes to toning your backside.  I am still breaking them in but I really do feel like they are working the back of my legs and my bootie.  Pushing the girls in their stroller has been something I have looked forward to doing and now I get an even better work out with these shoes.  Raleigh bought these in a half size smaller than what I normally wear but they actually seem to fit better than my normal size.

2. Mark Anthony Strictly Curls
If you have curly hair like me, I would recommend you trying this product!  I am constantly looking for a styling cream that keeps my curls soft instead of crunchy.  After I scrunch my hair with a towel, I allow my hair to air dry for about 10-15 minutes.  Once it has dried a bit, I apply about a nickel size amount of product into my hands and then I scrunch it into my hair.  Strictly Curls helps my hair to not frizz and to keep its shape throughout the day!  This item can be purchased at Ulta for under $10!

3. DC Cupcakes
Okay, I officially love this show!  It is about two sisters, Sophie and Katherine, that ditched their corporate jobs to follow their dreams.  Two years ago, they opened Georgetown Cupcakes and since then business has been booming.  I love, love, love, the look of their cupcakes; particularly their signature swirl :)  They look so yummy and I would die to know how they get their frosting to be so puffy instead of looking like Duncan Hines (not hating on Duncan Hines but there is a difference in the way it looks!).  The show is interesting for me to watch because I love
baking and it is fun for me to see all of their different flavors.
Check out the show on TLC!

4. Craftsman Style Homes
One day my dream house is a craftsman style home.  I want a big front porch that looks comfortable and inviting.  On Sunday, Raleigh showed me a new development in Auburn that has these style homes.  We are suckers for older homes but the ones that we looked at had the character of an older home but it also had newer features such as drywall, open living spaces, and lots of closet space!  A girl can dream, right?  Especially a girl that has an architect for her husband?  Maybe one day.... :)

5. OPI Bubble Bath Nail Polish
What girl doesn't love to be pampered every now and again?  My toes have been in desperate need for a pedicure and I love this color!  It is very soft and sophisticated.  One of my favorite things that I love about this color is that it goes with any outfit and it still looks natural.  Also, I had a hunch but while searching for a picture of this polish, I ran across an article that says that Giada on the Food Network also wears this color on her show.  So, since she is my favorite Food Network Star this is officially my favorite nail polish color!

6. Cherry Limeade
Oh my goodness, I could enjoy this drink right this minute!  Nothing is better on a hot summer day than a Sonic Cherry Limeade.  One can beat the heat with this very yummy drink and the perfect time to purchase is during Happy Hour (2:00-4:00) because they are half off!  That means I can get a medium instead of a small!!!!  This drink is perfection in a cup.

7. Green Room Notebooks
One day while I was at Target, I ran across a set of these notebooks.  Mine came in a pack of three and I use them all the time.  They weren't that expensive and they are good for the environment.  A must pick for your back to school list!!!!

8. Moses Basket
While the girls were still in the NICU, I realized that I would need some type of basket to carry them up and down the stairs in our house. Moses baskets are portable, woven baskets that have handles attached for carrying babies from room to room.  I had my eye on one of these baskets at our local childrens' store but it was rather expensive.  Since that basket was a little out of my price range, I headed to the Internet and found a much more reasonably priced basket at Overstock.com I have just ordered this basket so I haven't gotten to use it yet, but all of the user ratings seemed to give it a thumbs up.  The two things that sold me on this basket were the attached hood and the gingham pattern because that matches our nursery.  Once the girls outgrow this basket, I can use it to store toys or transport dirty clothes.  I think it is so pretty and reminds me of the olden days.

9. Mixed C.D's
Who said we still can't have mixed c.d.'s in this age of I-pods? Raleigh is so making fun of me right now!!! My sister-in-law made me two mixed c.d.'s recently that I have really enjoyed listening to.  One was country and the other was christian.  My favorite songs off of these c.d.'s are American Honey by Lady Antebellum and Shine Your Light by Nicole Nordeman.  One thing that I loved about these mixes was KB labeled each song's title and artist.  So, when we plugged it into our I-tunes, we didn't have to look up all of these songs in order to label them correctly in our music library.  Giving a friend a mixed c.d. is an easy way to show some thoughtfulness!

10. Applique
Recently, I was given a fancy sewing machine and I am trying to learn how to use it!  One feature that I want to learn how to do is applique.  In regards to sewing, applique is a type of needlework where pieces of fabric, embroidery, or other materials are sewed onto another surface.  Applique is so cute for any age but is especially adorable for children.  I am hoping to take some of my plain white onesies and burp cloths and snazzing them up a bit with some cute applique designs.  A family friend told me about this great website called Planet Applique where you can download different images and fonts onto your computer.  Of course, you have to have a transfer system that can connect the image to your machine but if you have that capability there are so many cute ways to make ordinary clothes look special.  I am hoping to get good enough at doing this so I  can make little outfits for the girls and for baby shower gifts.

Hope you enjoyed this month's Chris10's!

Till next time, let your light shine!

2 'Round Here

So, I'm sure y'all are wondering how things have been 'round here since the girls have come home.  Well, I think we have been somewhat like any other couple that has brought their child home for the first time.  We have had kisses, dirty diapers, crying, cuddling, and much much more!

Adeline and Maralee are 12 weeks old in their cute new dresses!

After we brought the girls' home on Wednesday, we decided that Raleigh and I wanted to have our time alone with them.  The grandparents left and we just had the girls all to ourselves.  Raleigh decided to take the rest of the week off so for two whole days, it was just our little family of six.  We shared some great memories that I will never forget.  I loved having Raleigh home and I especially loved bonding more with the girls.  Feeding them at home is so much easier than feeding in the hospital.  I have found my spots that work and it really helped me having Raleigh around to assist.  In between feedings, we enjoyed getting some cuddle time on the couch.  It was so sweet having them lay on our chests as we all enjoyed the peacefulness of being at home.  Sometimes, the girls would lift their necks and just look up at us with those big blue eyes.  At times, they would laugh and then instantly we would see a puckered lip forming.  It is so darn cute!  Also, we have had fun watching our dogs observe the girls.  When we first came home, Lu Lu was more excited to see us and she also smelled food so that was all she focused on.  Lu Lu is a very clever dog and she has learned that if she is nice to the girls she will get to sit close to us still.  Obi, on the other hand, is so curious.  When he came barreling into the house, he instantly started to smell their car seats.  He is such a gentle dog and will lay his head in Raleigh's lap during feeds allowing their little bottoms to rest a top his head.  He doesn't seem to mind having these new additions.  I think the biggest thing that has bothered them is our late night feeds because we are constantly getting out of bed so the dogs are having to move as well.  Obi usually retreats to the couch and Lu Lu ends up all over the place by the end of the night!

Maralee and Adeline
Thank you Aunt Ashley for our bunny sleepers!
Maralee is O-U-T!

Adeline loves some cuddle time with dad!

Other than cuddling, we have gotten to experience some first time memories around here.  We gave the girls their first baths and Maralee has officially tee-teed on me while I was washing her!  They give us some crocodile tears but they seem to like having their hair washed.  Such girls!!!!
 Maralee's first bath!

She is clean but not happy!!!

 Adeline's first bath!

She did good until the end!

Another first memory that we made was taking the girls' on a walk around the block.  With the temperature being so hot, we have tried to make the walks quick and short.  It just feels so good to me to get outside.  Walking the dogs in the evening has always been a cool down time for us and a great way to transition from work to home.  We have been looking forward to pushing a stroller on these evening walks and I really enjoyed getting to do this.  Right now, we are having to use our Graco Duo-Glider but we also purchased a jogging stroller at a consignment sale that we can't wait to use when the girls get old enough.
The bumpy roads put the girls to sleep!

Thursday was a big day for us because we had to go to the optometrist and the pediatrician.  Both visits went well and it really helped me to have my mom that day.  It worked great because she could watch the girls while I did the paperwork and she was also a much needed extra hand toting them to and from the car.  Our first appointment for the day was the optometrist.  As I mentioned before, preemies have to constantly have their eyes checked to make sure that they do not develop retinopathy which is when retina detachment can occur.  Both girls' eyes are still in stage 1 (lowest stage, so that is good) but we will continue to have follow-up appointments with our NICU optometrist and then a pediatric optometrist.  After that visit, we had a short lunch break and then it was on to our pediatrician.  The girls' were weighed and thankfully they both gained weight!  Adeline is 5.2 and Maralee is 4.13!  Both weights are good but still a little under what they should be so we are going back this week to check on their progress.  I really like our pediatrician so far because he seems to want us to have a normal experience with our girls.  He encouraged us to have some awake time and play time with them; which makes me feel like they are just like any other newborn baby.  Soon, we will have to visit the cardiologist and the early development program but this week we just had these two visits.

Friends, we are so fortunate to have family members that want to help us and want to see our children.  They headed home last Wednesday but when the weekend arrived they were up here again to have their visits with the girls.  Also, both of our moms have agreed to come up once a week each to help me.  This is great because it gives me a break and also lets me run errands, work on the blog, sleep, etc.  We have been getting through the late night feeds but we are still figuring out the best system for us.  Poor Maralee loves to be held after her feeds and while this is great during the day; it is hard for us at night.  If we put her back in the pack-n-play right after she is finished, she will cry her little head off.  Also, Adeline has not been regular at going poopey, so she tends to get a little fussy when she is getting close to doing her business.  With that said, I had a hard time by myself on Friday and I had my first little breakdown that evening with Raleigh.  I felt so bad crying because it had nothing to do with the girls' or him but more to do with exhaustion and lack of fresh air.  So, this weekend I took Lu Lu on a walk while Raleigh watched the girls and it did me so much good to have a little bit of alone time.  Also, on Sunday we had a day date to Auburn while Raleigh's parents had their time loving on the twins.  I think it is so important for parents to spend time together and focus on their relationship to make their family stronger.  Sunday was just what we needed after a long first week of firsts!

My parents gettin' their baby fix!

I can't believe that the girls are 13 weeks old.  Having them home just seems so natural.  Even though the late nights are tough, I still love this experience.  It is so worth it to have them in my arms at all times of the day.  This week, I have been reading in the book of Joshua and I feel like our experience has somewhat mirrored the experience of the Israelites. After being blessed with children (like Abraham and Sarah), we had to travel in our desert until we reached the land filled with milk and honey.  We (like Moses) had to "not let this Book of the Law depart from our mouths; we had to meditate on it day and night" (Joshua 1:8) in order for us to defeat our enemy.  Also, like Joshua we had to "Be strong and courageous.  Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go" (Joshua 1:9).  Finally, after fighting our battle, we had rest from war (Joshua 11:23) and have joyfully received our inheritance.  Joshua 21:43 says, "So the Lord gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their forefathers, and they took possession of it and settled there.  The LORD gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their forefathers.  Not one of their enemies withstood them; theh LORD handed all their enemies over to them.  Not one of all the LORD's good promieses to the house of Israel failed; every one was fulfilled."
Adeline looks so cute cuddled up in the boppy!

Sometimes the girls touch each others' hands while they sleep...forever sisters!

Friends, I know with all of my heart and soul that God delivered those babies into our arms.  I know that He is the one to be given all praise and honor for He remains true to his promises.  Our God is a God that shows love and mercy to His children.  Our family is so grateful for receiving our inheritance and we want to continue to show how He is impacting our lives.  Next Monday, August 9th, we will celebrate our blog's first year of existance.  We have come so far from where we started and we want our message to continue to grow.  Please continue to check the blog because on that Monday we will be sharing the direction that we think God is leading us in our spiritual walk with him.  Thank you friends for rejoicing with us as we have our baby girls home at last.

Till next time, let your light shine!

Blessings, christen

Memorizing scripture has always been a goal of mine.  Having verses on the tip of my tongue can help me in all situations of my daily life such as driving my car, talking to a friend, or even calming me down when frustrations occur.  I have tried lots of different methods, but my newest method that I think will work best is having an accountability partner to trade verses with each month.  So, I called on one of my dear friends and asked her if she would like to exchange a verse with me each month and we would try to memorize both verses before the month ends.  We figured memorizing two verses would be an attainable goal and we felt like we would actually accomplish this goal because we were being held accountable.  Below, I have the two verses that we chose (I picked the first verse and she did the second).  We would love to invite you to memorize these scriptures with us or you can pick your own - whatever works best for you!  I would encourage you to do this with a friend because it makes you stay on your toes and not push this to the back of your to-do list.  Write these verses down on note cards and place them all around your house (one friend of mine even puts it on her phone!!) so you are constantly looking at them throughout your day.
Happy memorizing!!!!!!

Hillsong United
The I Heart Revolution: With Hearts As One

Product Description
Best-selling worship band Hillsong UNITED is back with a new project to help spread their encouraging message of The I Heart Revolution. This 2 CD release is made up of 28 Hillsong United favorite songs recorded live over the last few years as the band shared compassion and love to people in North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia.

Review
The I Heart Revolution may not be the newest contemporary worship album, but it has proven itself as the standard which I compare all other contemporary worship to.  The massive set list that is compiled over various parts of their world tour to create this album defines the kind of power that can be found in worship and praise.  Much like a U2 concert the audience must be given as much credit as the band themselves for the amazing experience that can only be found when thousands of people are united in lifting up his name.  The variety of songs found here can be played practically anywhere.  Often I will find myself truly worshiping in the workplace while these tunes play in the background of a busy day.  Powerful songs, like Shout Unto God, were meant to be sung as loudly as possible while cruising down the road or going for a run.  Others such as All I Need is You and From the Inside Out, will make you fight to hold in your emotions as you realize how true the lyrics are.

Recommendation
This 2-Disc set has been out a while and you should be able to find it at a decent price.  With 28 tracks there is something for everyone.  The track listing covers numerous themes and tempos.  I would absolutely recommend this album to anyone.  It is perfect for those who have not found a way into the contemporary worship scene.  I promise, let both discs play through all they way and I assure you that you will be moved regardless of your musical preferences.  For those familiar with modern praise and worship, if you don't have this already, pick it up - it's basically a greatest hits CD.  This album has encouraged me to sing louder and prouder than I ever have at church - I hope it does the same for you.
